East Central Province Student of the Year Application Available for High School Students & Active Chapter Members within the ECP Jurisdiction
February 10, 2020
Columbus, Ohio The East Central Province (ECP) of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated is pleased to announce the 2020 Student of the Year Competition for eligible high school and collegiate candidates. “We believe in supporting area students given the fact that one of our Revered Founders, Elder Watson Diggs, was a career educator (teacher and principal). It’s part of our philanthropy in the communities for which we live” said Darren Jordan, East Central Province Polemarch. This year’s Student of the Year Competition is scheduled for Saturday, April 4, 2020 at the Marriott Hotel in Warrensville Heights, OH during the upcoming ECP’s Province Council meeting.
Eligible high school students are nominated on the local level from either the local Guide Right, local Kappa League program or the respective scholarship committees for the alumni chapters of a particular city (Akron, Charleston, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Huntington, Pittsburgh, Wilberforce and Youngstown). Each alumni chapter can forward the completed applications of two individuals. “Not all alumni chapters have scholarship committees.” says Kojo Kandi, the ECP’s Guide Right Director. Adding, “This is why it is important to tap into the Guide Right or Kappa League chapters because every alumni chapter should be sending two representatives from the students they work with.”
Eligible collegiate candidates will come from the collective active chapters or college and university chapters of the fraternity. Like the alumni chapters, active chapters are urged to send up to two candidates each. In both instances, high school and college students must interview to receive a scholarship. All candidates must meet all respective qualifications as outlined in the ECP STOY application. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
The East Central Province website, http://ecpkapsi.com/ , will provide the application in a PDF fillable form according to Senior Vice Polemarch and ECP Webmaster Marcus Bailey. “This is the first time we’ve made this accessible in this manner for all potential participants. We believe in highlighting academically the creme of the crop.”
Students on both levels will be competing for scholarship dollars (high school and collegiate). Each finalist will be interviewed during the morning and during the public ECP Student of the Year competition on Saturday afternoon each candidate will share some form of “demonstrative” talent. Fundraising projections and sponsorship dollars secured to date indicate several thousand dollars should be awarded this year.
“We look forward to a strong field of candidates on each level and a spirited competition” said P.R.West, Sr, a career public school educator and the ECP Scholarship Chairman.
